By Joanne Engelhardt. For The Daily News. Big, boisterous musicals are Broadway By The Bay’s forte, so it’s no surprise the venerable Peninsula theater company selected “Miss Saigon” to kick off its 2016 season at the Fox Theatre in Redwood City. It continues for two more weekends, though only on Saturdays and Sundays. Yes, “Miss Saigon” is a grand-scale musical on the order of “Les Miserable” (created by the same people who teamed up to make “Les Mis”), but at its heart, it’s really a sweet — and bittersweet — love story that needs ample gentleness and stillness to be at its best.

Regrettably, there are too few of those small moments in this version, Rather, Musical Director Sean Kana’s large orchestra virtually drowns out at least half of the words sung and, in general, plays the score as if they’re performing at AT&T park rather than at the historic theater, This could also be due to heavy-handed sound design/mixing — or even poor placement of microphones, Whatever the cause, it’s a shame, because “Miss Saigon” has some fine musical passages that shouldn’t be blasted ballet shoes svg, ballerina svg, round monogram svg, frame for name, svg file, cut out, empty circle, dxf, pdf, for baby girl sv out to the rooftop, And whenever a musical is “sung-through” (meaning few or no lines of dialogue), it’s important to understand the song lyrics to know what’s happening on stage..

The second assault on the senses comes from the too vivid, too florid and too many scenic images and colors used to plaster the stage with montages, humongous American flags, Vietnamese flags, bigger-than-life moons, clouds — and a big chunk of action shown in short flashes here, there and everywhere, behind scrims that highlight scenes. That must have been what director Jason Jeffrey was going for, and although it works sometimes, more often than not, it just makes the story disjointed, hard to follow and ultimately too melodramatic.

“Miss Saigon,” based on Giacomo Puccini’s opera, “Madame Butterfly,” has more than enough melodrama of its own, It’s the tragic story of a doomed romance between an Asian woman and her American soldier lover, but “Miss Saigon” takes ballet shoes svg, ballerina svg, round monogram svg, frame for name, svg file, cut out, empty circle, dxf, pdf, for baby girl sv place in Vietnam in the 1970s rather than Japan in the early years of the 20th century, The fact that this production is overblown doesn’t take away from excellent vocals by the lead actors: As Kim, the sweet, naïve 17-year-old Vietnamese orphan sent to a Saigon bar/brothel during the war, Danielle Mendoza shows both vulnerability and resourcefulness as she first finds love with the earnest GI, Chris (a credible but rather bland Terence Sullivan), then forges a life for herself and her young son Tam (Nicolas Maggio), the product of her liaison with Chris..

Maggio, who alternates with Issac Taylor Beltran in this role, shows unexpected poise and charm at a very young age, and was totally captivating on opening night. As Chris’ best friend, John, Aaron Grayson is a puzzlement. He often talks too softly and sings too faintly. Yet when it’s time for John’s signature song, the stirring, gospel-rooted “Bui-Doi” (which retells the story of Vietnam veterans returning to the country three years after the war to help the street children left behind), his voice is commanding.

The same ballet shoes svg, ballerina svg, round monogram svg, frame for name, svg file, cut out, empty circle, dxf, pdf, for baby girl sv might be said of Anthony Rodriguez III as The Engineer, Rodriguez starts off tentatively in the opening number “The Heat is On in Saigon,” builds up steam by the time he sinisterly hisses “If You Want to Die in Bed” and then bursts out in raw animalism and sleazy charm in “The American Dream,” which brought down the house, By contrast, Brian Palac, who was terrific when he was The Engineer in Palo Alto Players’ production of “Miss Saigon” in 2014, seems placid and not nearly menacing enough as the play’s villain, Thuy..

“Saigon’s” creators, Alain Boublil and Claude-Michel Schonberg (with lyrics by Boublil and Richard Maltby Jr.), offer a number of songs that share musical similarities to the better-known score of “Les Mis.” But “Miss Saigon,” which opened in London in 1989 and debuted in the U.S. in 1991, managed to run on Broadway for 10 years. In New York, the show used a helicopter as a prop. Here, there’s no helicopter; just the sound — the relentlessly loud sound — of one. And there’s no ship and no sea when Kim, Tam and The Engineer sail to Bangkok on their way (they hope) to the United States. It’s pretty hokey to show images of big waves and expect the audience to imagine the characters are on a ship.

This musical is most affecting when there are only a few characters on stage or when the scene shifts to the tiny room where Kim and her son live, Yes, the bar scenes are lively and full of escapism for both the Vietnamese dancers looking to hook up with American soldiers as well as for the servicemen who want one more night of drunken sex before shipping out, But those scenes are there as contrast to the story at “Miss Saigon’s” core — the steely determination and courage of the young Asian ballet shoes svg, ballerina svg, round monogram svg, frame for name, svg file, cut out, empty circle, dxf, pdf, for baby girl sv mother who sacrifices herself for the welfare of her small child..
