For tickets, call 415-749-2228 or go to www.act-sf.org. One apartment in San Francisco becomes the setting for subsequent tenants from the 1960s to the present. Simply staged at San Francisco’s Exit Theatre, 156 Eddy St., “San Francisco, Here I Come!” features 15 actors playing a variety of roles in seven scenes, each written by a member of Left Coast Theatre Company and focusing on LBGT themes. While the scenes all explore important issues, some are more successful than others, with Rita Long’s “Apples and Orgies” one of my favorites.

This time, Julia Roberts, Jennifer Aniston, Kate Hudson, Jason Sudeikis, Britt Robertson, Margo Martindale, Timothy Olyphant, Aasif Mandvi, Sarah Chalke and Shay Mitchell, among others, are featured, Most of the characters are parents, but the story is only nominally about motherhood, “Mother’s Day” is far more concerned with ideas of marriage, initial dance/ballet tutu bracelet & chain necklace set - blue, purple, green tutu, yellow shoes - dance performance - w/ a gift careers, single dads, the military, prejudice, jealousy and grief, There are a few tossed-off lines about the paramount importance of a mother’s love, but they feel like lip service..

The screenplay, credited to four writers, is a shoddy mishmash of product placement for everything from Morton Salt to Cadillac. Other flaws involve exposition badly disguised as dialogue, psychoanalysis in a family film and message-laden lines like “I have abandonment issues,” as one character needlessly states. For its humor, “Mother’s Day” relies on hearty doses of generational and gender panic — over tampons, social media, texting, teen dating, even the wearing of shorts. There are also the fits about gay people and Indians, thrown respectively by the parents of Jessie (Kate Hudson) when they find out her spouse is a man from India, and about Gabby (Sarah Chalke) when they discover her partner is a woman. (The racist and homophobic comments are rightfully called out as offensive.).

The actual Mother’s Day holiday turns out to be terrible for all involved, replete with emergency-room trips and a runaway RV, It is possible that the day turns OK for a couple of characters, but that’s impossible to determine, since there is no logic to the space/time gaps in the storyline, The film also includes one of the most surreal moments in recent memory — single dad Bradley (Sudeikis) wildly overcorrecting his initial lack of enthusiasm for Mother’s Day because of the death of his wife, Upon realizing his mistake, he stuffs the house with flowers and balloons, then gives his teen daughters both a car and a karaoke machine, Worse, he uses the latter to perform a rousing rendition of the hip-hop initial dance/ballet tutu bracelet & chain necklace set - blue, purple, green tutu, yellow shoes - dance performance - w/ a gift classic “The Humpty Dance.”..

It’s a no-frills thriller that chills with the remorseless intensity of its storytelling. Deep in the dank backwoods of rural Oregon, the members of a punk-rock band are fighting for their lives against a gang of ultraviolent white-supremacist skinheads, and their odds for survival don’t look good. The band members have seen something they shouldn’t have, and now they need to be silenced to keep the skinheads’ deadly secret safe. The four musicians are trapped in a locked room — the green room of the title — of a grody dance hall. On the other side of the door, the leader of the supremacists (played by a bearded Patrick Stewart) invites them, in even and unemotional tones, to come out to meet their fate.

After a relatively brief setup sequence in which the band members — four scuffling young musicians played by Alia Shawkat, Anton Yelchin, Callum Turner and Joe Cole — are introduced, a sense of almost suffocating menace infuses every minute of the film to its conclusion, The menace is in the hostile stares that greet the group when they arrive at the club and the slam dancing of the patrons responding to the band’s raging music, Once the music stops and that door locks, the menace mutates to violence — of initial dance/ballet tutu bracelet & chain necklace set - blue, purple, green tutu, yellow shoes - dance performance - w/ a gift the decidedly low-tech variety, delivered with pistols, a box cutter, a couple of machetes, a shotgun or two and a couple of vicious dogs, Beware the dogs! — they rip, they tear, they kill..

Writer-director Jeremy Saulnier (whose previous movie, “Blue Ruin,” 2013 is a gritty, well-observed indie cult classic) keeps the focus tight. One room, throbbing with fear. Inside that room, the actors reveal unexpected depths in their characters. Three stand out: Stewart’s deadly skinhead boss; a young gang member, played by Imogen Poots, who becomes allied with the band members and turns resourceful and deadly; and Yelchin’s beleaguered musician, who is grievously injured while battling to stay alive.
